ORDINANCE NO. 94.05
AN ORDINANCE OF THE TOWN OF MARANA, ARIZONA, REPEALING ORDINANCE
NO. 91.17 IN ITS ENTIRETY, AND AMENDING AND ADDING CERTAIN SECTIONS TO
TITLE 16, SIGNS, OF THE MARANA DEVELOPMENT CODE.
WHEREAS, the Town Council of the Town of Maran a, Arizona did, on the 5th day of May
1987, adopt Ordinance No. 87.06 adding to the Town Development Code a new Title 16 entitled
"Sign Code"; and
WHEREAS, the Town Council of the Town of Maran a, Arizona did, on the 17th day of July,
1991, adopt Ordinance No. 91.17, amending and adding certain sections to the Sign Code; and
WHEREAS, the Town Council of the Town of Marana, Arizona desires to repeal the
amendments codified on Ordinance No. 91.17 in their entirety, replacing them with the amendments
contained herein, having found that the amendments made herein are in the best interests of the
citizenry of the Town of Mar ana.
THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the Town Council of the Town of Maran a, Arizona
that Ordinance No. 91.17 be repealed, in its entirety.

BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED that Section 16-502(H)Q On-Premises Commercial and
Industrial Signs, shall be added to Title 16, Sign Code, of the Marana Development Code, said
amendment to read as follows:
5. One company flag flown with the flag(s) of the State of Arizona and/or the United
States is permitted.
BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED that Section 16-502(1),1-10 Freeway Interchange Business
Signs, shall be added to Title 16, Sign Code, of the Marana Development Code, said amendment to
read as follows:
I. 1-10 Freeway Interchange Business Signs
1. Purpose. The purpose of this subsection is to assist the 1-10 Freeway traveler in
safely identifying which 1-10 Freeway interchange location provides retail business
clusters serving the traveling public. Any sign erected pursuant to the provisions of
this section relating to 1-10 freeway signage, is in addition to signs which are erected
pursuant to other sign code provisions.
2. Subsection definitions. For the purposes of this subsection:
a.
A "high volume retail business serving the freeway traveler" has at least one
of the following motorist services: lodging, gas, vehicle repair, camping or
food.

b. "1-10 Freeway Interchange Location" shall mean property which meets all of
the following requirements:
1. The property is zoned to allow retail businesses; and
2. The business property is located within four hundred (400) feet of
the edge of the freeway right-of-way; and
3. The business property is located within five hundred (500) feet
parallel to the freeway, measured from the edge of the right-of-way
of the roadway intersecting the freeway; and
4. The business property fronts on either the freeway right-of-way, or
the right-of-way of the roadway intersecting the freeway; and
5. The interchange is serviced by an entrance ramp, an exit ramp, or
both.
3. Sign Provision. At 1-10 Freeway Interchange Locations, signage meeting the
following specifications shall be permitted for a high volume retail business serving
the freeway traveling public:
a. Each business located at the 1-10 Freeway Interchange Location shall be
permitted one freestanding identification sign pursuant to this subsection, to
be located within the 1-10 Freeway Interchange Location, on the same parcel
as the business is located.
b. Any sign allowed pursuant to this subsection may not exceed three hundred
feet in area. In the event the sign is not solid, and includes "cutout" areas, the
sign area shall be measured by filling in all "cutout" areas, as if the sign were
the dimensions of the outside edges of all characters or designs.
c. Any sign allowed pursuant to this subsection may not exceed a height of
sixty-five (65) feet above base grade.
d. Any sign allowed pursuant to this subsection shall have a minimum clearance
often (10) feet.
e. There shall be a maximum of three (3) of the signs allowed pursuant to this
subsection at each corner of the freeway intersection, thus allowing a
maximum of twelve (12) signs allowed pursuant to this subsection at each
1-10 Freeway Interchange Location.
BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED that Section 16-502(1), Off Premise Location Signs, shall
be added to Title 16, Sign Code, of the Marana Development Code, said amendment to read as
follows:

J. Off Premise Location Signs - An off premise location sign is a sign whose primary purpose
is to assist motorists in locating destinations along unpaved roads:
1. One such sign is allowed at each of the two nearest intersections of the destination's
access road with paved streets.
2. The sign may be single or double faced.
3. The property owner's written permission for the sign's location is required for the
permit.
4. Signs shall not be placed within one hundred (100) feet of a residence without the
written permission of the owner of the residence.
5. The location, maximum area and height of a sign shall be:
a. Setback from the right-of-way at least equal to the height of the sign and
located outside of the sight visibility requirements of the Development Code
(Title 05.01.01).
b. No larger than six (6) square feet.
c. No higher than four (4) feet.
6. The content of the sign is limited to the name of the destination, a logo, the distance
to the destination and an arrow.
7. Such signs are limited to one sign in each quadrant of an intersection except where
two (2) or more signs are mounted on the same standard in which case the height
may be increased one (1) foot for each sign over one (1).
BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED that Section 16-602(1)(2), Grand-Opening Signs, of Title 16,
Sign Code, of the Marana Development Code, shall be amended to read as follows:
2. The sign or signs shall not be displayed more than two (2) weeks after the grand
opening date.
BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED that Section 16-602(1)(4), Grand-Opening Signs, of Title 16,
Sign Code, of the Marana Development Code, shall be added to read as follows:
4. Flags, plastic, cloth or other non-rigid banners and pennants used to attract attention
and/or for signs shall only be used for the grand-opening of a new business and shall
be removed no later than two (2) weeks after the grand-opening date.
BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED that Section 16-602(L), Street Banners, shall be added to
Title 16, Sign Code, of the Marana Development Code, said amendment to read as follows:

L. Street Banners
Street banners may only be used to announce Town events from three (3) weeks
prior to the event to one (1) week after the event. The location, height and mounting
of a street banner shall be acceptable to the Streets and Road Superintendent or
equivalent.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Mayor and Council of the Town of Maran a, Arizona, this
22nd day of February, 1994.
