AN ORDINANCE OF THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF MARANA, ARIZONA
AMENDING AND ADDING CERTAIN SECTIONS OF TITLE 16, SIGNS, OF THE
DEVELOPMENT CODE.
WHEREAS the Town Council of the Town of Marana, Arizona did,
on the 5th day of May 1987, adopt ordinance 87.06 adding to the
Town Development Code a new Title 16 entitled Sign Code, and
WHEI~EAS the Town Council does wish to amend and to add
certain sections of the Sign Code.
NOW, THEREFOP~E, BE IT ORDAINED by the Town Council of the
Town of Marana, Arizona that the following amendments and addi-
tions to the Sign Code be adopte~ by this ordinance to become
part of Title 16, sign Code, part of the Development Code.
1. Section 16-502, H, 6, On-Premises Commercial and Industrial
Signs, be added to read:
6. One company flag flow~ with the flags of the State of
Arizona and the United States is permitted.
2. Section 16-502 I, 1-10 Freeway Interchange Business Signs be
added to read:
I. 1-10 Freeway Interchange Business Signs
1. Purpose. The purpose of this subsection is to assist
the 1-10 Freeway traveler safely identify which 1-10 Freeway
interchange locations provide retail business clusters serving
the traveling public.
2. Subsection definitions. For the purposes of this sub-
section:
a. A high volu~e retail business serving the freeway trav-
eler is a retail business that can demonstrate by market studies,
surveys and comparable location data that:
1) the majority of their business is from the freeway
traveling public, and
2) their average daily customer volume exceeds or will
exceed within one year 1000 persons, and
3) their average daily sales tax taxable retail sales
volume exceeds or will exceed within one year $3000.00
b. 1-10 Freeway Interchange Location is property zoned to
allow retail businesses and located within 600 feet of the center
of an 1-10 Freeway Interchange.
3. Sign Provision. At 1-10 Freeway Interchange Locations
where the topography does not permit the freeway traveler to
readily identify the location at a distance sufficient for safe
exiting, the Marana Town Council may approve an on premise busi-
ness sign exceeding the height regulations for on premise Commer-
cial signs contained in Title 16-502.4 for a high volume retail
business serving the freeway traveling public provided:
a. There shall be not more than 2 such signs at any 1-10
Freeway Interchange location except when 2 signs are approved on
one sign post and,
b. Such sign shall be approved at the minimum height neces-
sary to be seen by the freeway traveling public and permit a safe
exit, and
c. Such sign shall be at least 500 feet from any other on
premise business sign exceeding the heightr limitaiton in title
16-502 H, and
d. Such sign shall be removed should the business not meet
the standards for a high volume ~etail business serving the
freeway traveling public for 4 consecutive months, and
e. Such sign shall be located where an existing or poten-
tial cluster of retail businesses serving the traveling public is
or is likely to be located.
3. Section 16-502 J, OFF PREMISE LOCATION SIGN be added to read:
J. OFF PREMISE LOCATION SIGN.
Off premise location sign is a sign whose primary purpose is to
assist motorists locate destinations along unpaved roads:
t. One such sign is ~11owed at each of the two nearest
intersections of the destinations access road with paved streets.
2. The sign may be single or double faced
3. The property owners ~ritten permission for the signs
location is re~ired for the permit.
4. Signs ~hall not be placed within one hundred (100) feet
of a residence without the written permission of the owner of the
residence
5. The location, maximum area and height of a sign shall
be:
a. setback from the right of way at least equal to the
height of the sign and located outside of the sight visibility
requirements of the Development Code (Title 05.01.01)
b. No larger than six (6) square feet
c. No higher than four (4) feet
6. The content of the sign is limited to the name of the
destination, a logo, the distance to the destination and an
arrow.
7. Such signs are limited to one sign in each quadrant of
an intersection except where two (2) or more signs sre mounted on
the same standard in which case the height may be increased one
(1) foot for each sign over one (1).
4. Section 16-602 I, 2 and 4, (Grand Opening Signs) are amended
and added to read:
2. The sign or signs shall not be displayed more than two
(2) weeks after the grand opening date.
4. Flags, plastic, cloth or other non-rigid banners and
penants used to attract attention and/or for signs shall only be
used for the grand opening of a new business and shall be removed
no later than two (2) weeks after the grand opening date.
5. Section 16-602 L, Street Banners be added to read:
L. STREET BANNERS
Street banners may only be used to announce Town events from
three (3) weeks prior to the event to one (1) week after the
event. The location, height and mounting of a street banner
shall be acceptable to the Streets and Roads Superintendent or
equivalent.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Mayor and the Town Council of
Town of Marana this 16th day of July, 1991.
