AN ORDINANCE AMENDING TOWN ORDINANCE 77.10 BY
AMENDING THE UNIFOp~ BUILDING CODE TO PEPJ~IT THE
USE OF STABILIZED UNBUBNED CLAY BRICK (ADOBE).
WHEREAS, the Town of Marana did enact that certain Ordinance
77.10 on the 6th day of September, 1977, and

dinance by adding an amendment to the Uniform Building Code,
allowing the use of stabilized unburned adobe brick in con-
Struction within the Town,
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CON~WON COUNCIL OF THE
TOWN OF MARANA THAT ORDINANCE 77.10, SECTION 02, UNIFORM
BUILDING CODE, IS HEREBY AMENDED BY ADDING THE FOLLOWING
REVISIONS TO CHA~ 24 GF SAID CODE:

£xterior walls shall in no case be less than 14 inches thick and '
interior w&11s shall ~ot be less than 10 Inches thick. Foundation
Par-to walls n~t over 6 feet high may be 8 inches thick.
Adobe shall not be used for foundation (stem} or basement walls
and sh~11 have · footing cc~ply~ng with this Code. The foot~n~
w~dth and depth shall be governed by the allowable bearing
pressure of the soil and allowable ~at~ria~ stresses.
(b) Classes of Addle. 1. The tern s~llized a~ unit~ is defined ~o
man adobes made of soil to which certain admixtures or emulsified uphalt are
Modulus of Pa~u~e. The units shall a~e~age 50 po~mds per square inch.
Holstu~e Content. The moisture con~ent of the unit shall be not ~re than
4 perc~2t of oven dry v~i~mt.
Absorption. A dried 4 inch cube cut f~ · sample ~ unit sh~11 absorb
not ~re than 2 1/2 percent moisture by weiqht on · 24 hour pad t~t. If
the sample absorbs more than 2 1/2 percen= moisture by weiqht, the materis/
shall be clasaAfied as natural (raw) adobe.
Shrinkage Cracks. ~o re%its shall contain more than 3 shrinkage cracks, and
no shrinkage crank shall exceed 3 inches in len9~h o= 1/8 inch in width.
