HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 97-080 proposal for direct election of the mayorMARANA RESOLUTION NO. 97-80 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF MARANA, ARIZONA, CALLING FOR THE SUBMISSION TO THE VOTERS OF THE ISSUE OF WHETHER THE TOWN CODE SHOULD BE AMENDED TO PROVIDE THAT THE MAYOR OF THE TOWN OF MARANA SHALL BE CHOSEN BY THE VOTERS. WHEREAS, the present Mararia Town Code provides that the Mayor shall be selected by the members of the Town Council, and that the Mayor shall serve a two-year term; and WHEREAS, Arizona law provides for a procedure whereby the voters may decide whether the Mayor shall be selected at-large by a vote of the citizens of the Town, although such a procedure must be approved by the voters prior to implementation; and WHEREAS, the Marana Town Council deskes to submit to the voters the issue of whether the Town Code should be amended to provide that the Mayor be chosen by a vote of the citizens. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and Council of the Town of Marana, Arizona as follows: The Town Clerk is directed to present the issue of the direct election of the Mayor to the voters at special election if one is held prior to March, 1998 and, if held by special election, the direct election of the Mayor is to appear on next primary election ballot, who will be asked to decide whether the Town Code should be amended to provide that the Mayor will be chosen by a popular vote of the voters of the Town of Marsha, said vote to occur every 4 years on the date of the regular primary election.
