The meeting convened at 5:20 p.m. Discussion ensued regarding whether to
have a carnival at Sportspark. Diane will contact Jan at the Chamber and get the
information from the carnival people. Sportspark does not have a problem if we do the
carnival outside the fencing area. Diane will report back to the committee.
Diane reported on progress in getting the birthday cakes. It was suggested
having a cake-off instead of a chili cook-off, which would eliminate the need for
contracting for a large cake at the Marana Park. We would still need a big sheet cake
for the Sportspark facilities.
Estes School will be the location of the pancake breakfast, which the Marana
Cotton Rotary Club will sponsor. The Rotary will provide 20 VIP tickets for the
breakfast.
The fireworks have been confirmed for $5000, beginning at approximately 7:00
p.m. at Sportspark.
Jane reported on the parade. The parade continues to be of some concern due to
the CMID canals along Barnett as well as parking. The parade committee would
appreciate input regarding alternative routes. Jane asked for a contact from each
committee members for a parade entry. She expects to get a letter out to prospective
entrants the week of December 9. The committee is looking for a celebrity to act as
Grand Marshal. Some suggestions were: Don Collier, Lute Olson, Willard Scott, UA
Women's softball team. Joe Parsons suggested contacting Terry Leonard, who is the
stunt director at Old Tucson Studios.
Jocelyn contacted the Marana Chamber of Commerce to get the budget from the
1996 Founders' Day. Mike Overstreet from Insty Prints agreed to provide stationery for
the parade committee as an in-kind contribution.
Jocelyn asked the committee members for contacts in area car/truck clubs.
Joe Parsons reported on possible entries for the parade. The Budweiser horses
may be in the area at the time of our event. Binyon's Stagecoach (spelling?) may also be
in the area and could be used to transport the Grand Marshal in the parade. Simplot
has a team of small miniature white mules. Golden Eagle Distributors may have
suggestions for entries as well (Betty Horrigan).
Joe reported that he plans to have horse functions both March 15 and March 16.
He will start at noon on Saturday and all day Sunday. He is targeting a youth show on
Saturday and Sunday will be more for locals of all ages. Jocelyn said she would get
information on the event to him so he can distribute it to his contacts as soon as
possible.
Pauline reported on the Marana Park entertainment. She will provide Melanie
with a copy of her worksheet to help facilitate getting sponsor donations for various
activities. It was decided that if the Marana schools wanted to sponsor games and other
booths at the park, they should also be responsible for prizes.
Russ and Pauline reported on the bike ride. Pauline is still trying to get in touch
with Richard Underwood, however, GABA may help with volunteers for the event.
Russ would like the ride to start at approximately 7:00 a.m. in order to finish by the
time the parade starts. Pauline will have a layout of the route by the December 19
meeting. Russ will contact the perimeter riding association for assistance. Pauline
indicated that we could put advertising materials for our ride in the Casa Grande ride
packet. Casa Grande's bike ride will be March 8, 1997. Need to find out if GABA
charges to put information in their rider packets.
Sandy and Bradshaw reported on activities at Sportspark and distributed a
proposal, which Doug McCoy explained. Each activity has been budgeted and can be
given to Melanie to use in getting sponsor participation.
Bradshaw plans to have canine demonstrations, the Emergency Response Team
(similar to SWAT), and Northwest Fire will coordinate mini-musters with area fire
departments and a rescue extrication (Jaws of Life).
Sandy requested all committees to have budgets similar to what Sportspark
put together by the December 19 meeting. There is approximately $8700 in the Town's
Founders' Day budget which can be put toward the 20th anniversary party.
Included in the Sportspark budget is a gate charge of $1.50, $1 of which can be
redeemed inside the park for rides/games, etc. There was discussion about whether to
have a gate charge at all. The committee asked for input and will have a decision by
December 19.
Sherry requested that a pie eating contest be added to the Sportspark activities.
Perkins donated the pies for the 1996 4th of July event. Perhaps another business would
be willing to donate pies for this event.
Bradshaw reported that he has a $2500 budget for public safety/transportation.
Jocelyn will get in touch with businesses, including farm and agricultural
businesses for the expo at Sportspark, and will work with Melanie to coordinate
publicity/advertising and marketing strategies for the parade, Marana Park, bike ride
and Sportspark activities.
The next meeting of the full committee will be Thursday, December 19, 1996,
5:15 p.m., at the Town Hall Annex (Orange Grove and Thornydale).
The meeting was adjourned at 6:50 p.m.
