Regional Status of Ice
The Ice Rink (Iceoplex, Gateway Ice Center, Tucson Ice) closed in
April 2007.
The Tucson Convention Center offers the only sheet ice in Southern
Arizona. TCC hosts the University of Arizona Icecats Hockey Club and
offers extremely limited public access.
Local supporters report a high demand for ice time and large numbers
of youth and families traveling to the Phoenix area weekly to find ice.
Advocates representing youth hockey, men's and women's adult
hockey, figure skating, and various levels of minor league professional
hockey have all expressed interest in the development of ice facilities
in Pima County -preferably along the I-10 corridor.
Pima County Proposed Ice Rink
Pima County staff have been directed to develop a Request for
Proposals (RFP) for an experienced ice rink operator to build and
operate an ice facility on Pima County owned property located at the
Ted Walker Park.
No financial incentives will be offered beyond slow-cost lease for the
property.
Town of Marana staff are being kept up-to-date as the RFP is
developed and have been asked to provide feedback on the draft.
The RFP clearly stipulates that the developer must comply with all
Town of Marana standards, development procedures, and permitting
requirements.
Ice Rink Development
The current draft RFP requires respondents to:
• Enter into along-term lease for the property.
• Develop one or two sheets of ice at least 200'x85' with high quality
sound and lighting systems, and associated spectator seating (if one
sheet the facility must be designed for expansion to two sheets)
• Design and build the facility to LEED Silver standards.
• Provide adequate parking, male/female/referee locker rooms,
restrooms, and medical aid amenities.
• Provide for weekly public access to the ice.
The RFP encourages the operator to build an ancillary revenue
producing activity into the space (restaurants, shops, childcare, fitness
area, etc.).
