Capping - Potential impact to Marana • Policy Question(s): -What role should the Town play in managing solid waste activities? - Legal considerations Historical Perspective Tangerine Road Landfill was opened for service in March 1983; the first modern-era environmentally sound (lined) sanitary landfill • Tangerine Road Landfill - at 80 acres is Pima County's largest Tangerine Road Landfill will close to the public some time in 2009 Tangerine Road Landfill Facts and Figures • About 200,000 people live in the area serviced by the Tangerine Road Landfill • Tangerine Road Landfill accepted about 283 tons of waste a day in June (per county figures) • An average of 226 residents and haulers tip a load there each day • It is 13 miles to the nearest Pima County transfer station in Catalina • It is 20.4 miles to the nearest City of Tucson landfill, Los Reales, on the Southeast side Status of Pima County Landfill Sites • Tangerine Road Landfill will remain open for limited waste disposal until it is filled (anticipated July, 2009) • Pima County's other landfill near Sahuarita, is slated to close in 2011 • There are no plans to add another public landfill any where else in Pima County's 9,168 square miles Tangerine Road Landfill Status • Town staff met with Pima County staff in September 2008 • Tangerine Road Landfill is near capacity, projected closing to the public between January and June 2009 • Landfill cannot be expanded beyond current size, no room for transfer station on site • Pima County does not have funding or land to build new landfill and is seeking funding to completely close Tangerine Landfill . z.:.... r K -.. 7 ya' -~ z ~ t yyyy a y* YY erf l~~ 1 A'` -y r a# r ~~1~-t ,'.
