DISCUSSION
The Tour of the Tucson Mountains is an annual bicycle race held in April by the Perimeter Bicycling
Association of America. The race circumnavigates the Tucson Mountains on a 70 mile course. This
race is the major springtime event held by Perimeter Bicycling Association in the Tucson area.
Last year, the 19th Annual Tour of the Tucson Mountains event was held on April 23rd, with the start
and finish in front of the Marana Municipal Center. The event drew approximately 1,000 riders for
the 70, 27 and 4 mile events. The change to the race starting location was well received by the
entrants, and was the first major event held at the Marana Municipal Center.
Perimeter Bicycling Association events are fund raisers for local charities, including Tu Nidito and
the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. As such, they seek sponsorships and in-kind contributions to
defray costs and further their fund-raising efforts. The relocation of the start and finish line of the
event to Marana has resulted in some additional expenses to the Perimeter Bicycling Association in
presenting the race, particularly in the area of police control of intersections. Last year, the Marana
Police Department charged the Perimeter Bicycling Association approximately $6,500 for traffic
control activities the morning of the race.
Perimeter Bicycling Association is requesting that the Town of Marana become the Presenting
Sponsor for this year's race by agreeing to underwrite the Marana Police Department expenses.
Mr. Richard DeBernardis, President of Perimeter Bicycling Association of America, will be present
to make this request, explain the community benefits of this race, and answer any questions.
