TOWN COUNCIL
MEETING
INFORMATION
MEETING DATE:
TOWN OF MARANA
April 4, 2006
AGENDA ITEM: K. 2
TO: MAYOR AND COUNCIL
FROM: James R. DeGrood, P.E. Assistant Town Manager
SUBJECT: Marana High School after prom party
DISCUSSION
At the March 7, 2006 Council meeting, a presentation by the Students Together Against
Narcotics and Drinking group for Marana High School requested financial support for their after
prom party. The students wish to hold their after prom party at Bedroxx Entertainment Center
from 12:30 am until 3:30 am following their prom. The students held this event last year, and
over 150 students attended. This year they anticipate 300 students will be in attendance.
The after prom party is intended as a safe alternative to other choices on prom night and will be a
"lock - in" event. All students must go directly from the prom to Bedroxx. The students will be
given a drink and slice of pizza, and will have unlimited bowling, billiards and video games
during the event.
To cover the cost of the proposed event, the students requested a donation from the Town in the
amount of $5,000.
The Town has accumulated "entertainment credit" with Bedroxx in accordance with the
Development Agreement between the Town and Spare Time Family Entertainment Center,
L.L.C. Staff is currently exploring with the School District and the Bedroxx owner and manager
whether this credit can be applied to the cost of the after prom party.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff finds value in promoting alcohol free events following high school functions and believes
that establishing a tradition of safe after function activities associated with the high school merits
Town support.
Staff further requests approval to provide the requested financial support and/or entertainment
credit to underwrite the cost of this event.
SUGGESTED MOTION
I move to underwrite the cost of the Marana High School after prom party, using entertainment
credit and/or contingency funds.
