HomeMy WebLinkAbout04/18/2006 Blue Sheet Wellness Center Improvements MEETING DATE: April 18, 2006 AGENDA ITEM: TOWN COUNCIL MEETING INFORMATION TOWN OF MARANA 1.6 TO: MAYOR AND COUNCIL FROM: James R. DeGrood, P.E. Assistant Town Manager SUBJECT: Wellness Center Improvements DISCUSSION The original design for the Municipal Center contemplated the furnishing of a wellness center for use by employees. This room was left unfinished in order to reduce the overall project costs. The Town's contract for healthcare with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona provides for a rebate of the cost of service when insurance usage by employees is less than anticipated. Last year the Town received a rebate in excess of $250,000. The Town's Wellness Committee has been active in providing health awareness activities and is advocating for the completion of the wellness center to include the installation of cardio and strength training equipment. The Wellness Committee believes that this wellness center will be benefit employees by providing convenient access to exercise equipment and will benefit the Town by encouraging a healthier workforce. The wellness center improvements are estimated to cost $80,000 and will include minor building improvements in addition to the equipment to be purchased. The Wellness Committee is recommending a modest monthly payroll deduction for all employees wishing to use the wellness center to pay for equipment upkeep and future replacement. RECOMMENDATION Staff recognizes that having a healthy workforce is of significant benefit to the Town in both productivity and healthcare cost containment. Staff recommends that the wellness center improvements be authorized, and that these improvements be funded from the insurance rebate received from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona. SUGGESTED MOTION I move to direct staff to proceed with the wellness center improvements, with a cost not to exceed $80,000.
