TOWN COUNCIL
MEETING
INFORMATION
TOWN OF MARANA
MEETING DATE: April 18, 2006
AGENDA ITEM: I. 7
TO: MAYOR AND COUNCIL
FROM: James R. DeGrood, P.E. Assistant Town Manager
SUBJECT: Request for funding for the Santa Cruz Valley Heritage Alliance,
Inc.
DISCUSSION
The Santa Cruz Valley Heritage Alliance was formed as an Arizona not-for-profit corporation to
advocate for Congressional designation of the Santa Cruz Valley National Heritage Area, and to
ultimately serve as its local management entity. The feasibility study for the National Heritage
Area designation has been completed and has been submitted to the National Park Service and
our Congressional Delegation.
The designation of the Santa Cruz Valley National Heritage Area will benefit the entire area in
promoting regional tourism, and can provide promotional assistance for the Town's Heritage
Park.
A request has been made of the Town to provide funding support of the Santa Cruz Valley
Heritage Alliance in the amount of $5,000 per year for the next three years. The Alliance board
of directors is made up of 25 members representing municipalities and diverse tourism interests.
Ora Mae Ham serves as Marana's representative on the board of directors.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff believes that the establishment of the Santa Cruz Valley National Heritage Area is of
benefit to both the Town and Region. Staff supports the funding of the Santa Cruz Valley
Heritage Alliance, Inc., subject to satisfactory deliverables and reporting.
SUGGESTED MOTION
I move to approve $5,000 funding for the Santa Cruz Valley Heritage Alliance, Inc. out of the
current budget and that staff budget $5,000 a year for their future funding. I further direct staff
to negotiate a schedule of deliverables and reporting.
