HomeMy WebLinkAbout06/06/2006 Blue Sheet Arizona Automobile Theft Authority Grant TOWN COUNCIL MEETING INFORMATION TOWN OF MARANA MEETING DATE: June 6, 2006 AGENDA ITEM: 1.5 TO: MAYOR AND COUNCIL FROM: Richard Vidaurri, Chief of Police SUBJECT: Resolution No. 2006-72: Relating to the Police Department; approving and authorizing the full execution of a Grant Agreement with the Arizona Automobile Theft Authority DISCUSSION On May 2, 2006, the Marana Police Department received notification of a $5,000 grant award from the Arizona Automobile Theft Authority (AA T A) to support overtime pay for police officers. The goals listed under this grant initiative include: · Reducing the total number of stolen vehicles reported compared to the same period the prevIOUS year. · Increasing the total number of stolen vehicles recovered compared to the same period the prevIOUS year. · Increasing the number of suspects arrested for vehicle theft. Under the Grant Agreement the Marana Police Department agrees to report quarterly on: · The total number of stolen vehicles reported compared to the same period the previous year. · The total number of stolen vehicles recovered compared to the same period the previous year. · The total number of suspects arrested for vehicle theft. Full funding for the project will be forwarded upon execution of the agreement documents. RECOMMENDATION Staff recommends the Mayor and Council authorize the Chief of Police to execute the Grant Agreement to fund overtime for police surveillance and investigations related to automobile theft. SUGGESTED MOTION I move to approve Resolution No. 2006-72. CNAbluesheet 5/31/2006 MARANA RESOLUTION NO. 2006-72 RELATING TO THE POLICE DEPARTMENT; APPROVING AND AUTHORIZING THE FULL EXECUTION OF A GRANT AGREEMENT WITH THE ARIZONA AUTOMOBILE THEFT AUTHORITY WHEREAS, the Town of Marana recognizes its duty to protect its citizens through effective police powers; and WHEREAS, the Marana Police Department is working to reduce the number of vehicles stolen; and WHEREAS, the Marana Police Department is working to increase the number of suspects arrested for vehicle theft; and WHEREAS, the Arizona Automobile Theft Authority has awarded the Marana Police Department a grant to help further these goals; and WHEREAS, grant funding will support overtime pay for police officers during a period from July 1, 2006 to June 30,2007. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF MARANA, ARIZONA, that the Chief of Police is authorized to execute the Grant Agreement to fund overtime for police surveillance and investigations related to automobile theft.
