Project Name Flood Plain Status Letters
Project Status /Details:
• The Town has received the 2011 Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) from FEMA and has
begun a community outreach campaign.
• 10, 254 parcels would have been added to the floodplain by the 2007 FEMA Draft
maps. Conversely, 1,000 parcels are affected by the new 2011 FIRM.
• Targeted outreach letters describing a person's floodplain status before and after the
new maps and giving one of nine specific recommendations based on their situation went
out to citizens March 18, 2011. Letters to businesses and large land developers went
out the following weeks.
• 148 people received a letter stating that their situation is improved (removed from
floodplain or into a less hazardous floodplain)
• 459 people received a letter stating that their situation is worse (going into the flood-
plain or into a more hazardous floodplain)
• 197 people received a letter stating that the floodplain limits are changing on their
property (but generally the same floodplain)
• 9,000 people did not need to receive a letter because of the efforts from the Town of
Marana.
• To date, there have been about 30 calls from citizens who received letters, which is less
than was anticipated.
• A public open house is scheduled for May 5 from 4 p.m. -7 p.m. at Estes Elementary for
any residents that would like additional information on their flood plain status.
