HomeMy WebLinkAbout09/19/2006 Blue Sheet Grant Agreement with ACJC Oversight Council on Driving Under the Influence Abatement Program TOWN COUNCIL MEETING INFORMATION MEETING DATE: TOWN OF MARANA September 19,2006 AGENDA ITEM: I. 4 TO: MAYOR AND COUNCIL FROM: Richard Vidaurri, Chief of Police SUBJECT: Resolution No. 2006-147: Relating to the Police Department: approving and authorizing full execution of a grant agreement with the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission Oversight Council On Driving Under The Influence Abatement Program. DISCUSSION Marana participates in the Taskforce under an intergovernmental agreement with Tucson, Pima County, and other area agencies. Taskforce deployments coincide with major holidays and special events like Rodeo Week and graduation season. The Taskforce coordinates a regional DUI abatement effort that includes both enforcement and media coverage targeting holiday partiers. These deployments are highly visible and promoted through news channels and public service announcements. The high visibility of the coordinated effort increased enforcement and the news coverage has worked well to reinforce the message. DUI Taskforce deployments allow the MPD to increase the number of officers on the roads by providing additional staffing to targeted DUI enforcement in trouble areas without reducing the department's ability to respond to calls. Each deployment utilizes four officers on eight-hour shifts for a total of32 hour of overtime. At an average wage of$34.37 per hour plus ERE and vehicles and equipment the cost to the Town of Marana is approximately $1,800 per deployment. Coordinated efforts between the Marana Police Department and the Southern Arizona DUI Taskforce to reduce the number of impaired drivers along the 1-10 corridor and other targeted areas within the Town of Marana have been extremely successful and Town officials recognize the value of deployments. This initiative offers Marana the ability to be active on a regional basis and play its part to save lives and provide safer roadways for its neighbors, friends, and visitors. RECOMMENDATION Staff recommends authorizing full execution of a grant agreement with the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission Oversight Council On Driving Under The Influence Abatement Program.
