TOWN OF MARANA
MEETING DATE: October 3,2006
AGENDA ITEM: I. 7
TO: MAYOR AND COUNCIL
FROM: T. VanHook, Community Development Director
SUBJECT: Resolution No. 2006-156: Relating to Grants Administration:
approving full execution of a grant agreement with the Tohono
O'Odham Nation to fund educational programs for the Old
Pueblo Archaeology Center.
DISCUSSION
Old Pueblo Archaeology Center is a Marana-based 501(c)(3) educational organization serving
southern Arizona since 1994. The Center's mission is to educate children and adults to
understand and appreciate archaeology and other cultures, to foster the preservation of
archaeological and historical sites, and to develop a lifelong concern for the importance of
nonrenewable resources and traditional cultures.
Under Proposition 202, Arizona Tribes must share 12% of gaming revenues with local
governments. The Tohono O'Odham Nation has chosen to share these revenues with non-profit
agencies through intergovernmental agreements with local governments. The Town of Marana
agreed to submit a grant request to the Nation in the amount of $50,000 to help Old Pueblo
Archaeology Center continue offering educational activities that serve both Marana residents and
the Tohono O'Odham Nation. The Nation has awarded these fund and is now asking the Town
to execute a grant agreement and oversee the funding of programs at the Center.
