Civic Center Drive, Marana, Arizona 85653 Council Chambers, 3une 5, 2012, at ar after 6:00 PM Ed Honea, Mayor Patti Comerford, Vice Mayor David Bowen, Council Member Herb Kai, Council Member Carol McGarray, Council Member Jon Post, Council Member Roxanne Ziegler, Council Member STUDY SESSION CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL. Mayor Honea called the meeting to order at 6:08 p.m. Town Clerk Bronson called roll. All Council M�mbers except Vice Mayor Comerford were present. There was a quorum. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE/INVOCATION/MOMENT OF SILENCE. Dispensed with until the regular meeting by Mayor Honea. APPROVAL OF AGENDA. Upon motion by Council Member Bawen, second by Council Nfember Ziegler, the agenda was approverl 6-4. DISCUSSIONiDIRECTIONIPOSSIBLE ACTION l: Presentation� Relating to inter�overnmental relations� t�resentation from the Border Patrol about its ma� efforts to secure the U.S.-Mexico border. Introduced by Rodney Campbell who introdueed Border Patrol Agent Simon Keller, who came to give an update on what Border Patrol is doing to keep Arizona's border with Mexico safe. Agent Keller, an 11-year veteran, presented a PowerPoint of the new Border Patrol strategy; a key component of that being public outreach. This is available to any entity or organization. There is also a 7-week citizen academy. Operation Detour is available to high school and middle school which is an anti-gang program ta teach kids how to pratect themselves from cartels. They are also available, with vehicles and K-9 handlers, to come to any events. After the PowerPoint presentation on sector resources which enable enfarcement as well as terrorism prevention, Agent Keller then showed a 10-minute video on basic interdiction effarts, conducted primarily in the �uma sector. June 5, 2012 Study Session Council Minutes 2: Presentation� Relatin�to Boards Commissions and Committees� presentation from the repartin��rou� of the Marana Citizens' Forum on the recommendatians developed durm� the session on "Communit�Enga e� ment" Introduced by Gilbert Davidsan and presented by Forum member Jim Shaw on behalf of the reporting committee. Recommendations included having an active presence by staff and Council Members at formal and informal public events; expanding the Tawn Calendar for all community events which can be published on the town's website as well as a hard capy and in the Marana Weekly News; that the Forum members conduct a community survey to determine haw citizens want to become engaged; required participation by Farum members in the Town's Community Connections program to enable members to become better ambassadors in the community; and for Council to acknowledge that any increase in citizen participation is successful civic engagement. Ginny Huffman, anather member of the reporting team, ended the presentation with more detail on what they would like to see in the cammunity calendar. Executive Session pursuant to A.R.S. §38-431.03 {A)(3), Council may ask for discussion or consultation for legal advice with the Town Attorney concerning any matter listed on this agenda.
