HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 2013-014 support for the community food bankMARANA RESQLUTION NO. 2013-014 RELATING TO COMMUlVITY DEVELOPMENT; FORMALLY RECOGIVIZING AND PROVIDING SUPPORT AND ASSISTANCE TO THE COMMUNITY FOOD BANK, INC. IN ITS EFFORTS TO ANTICIPATE AND MEET THE FOQD NEEDS OF THE HUNGRY IN THE COMMtJ1vITY. W���,s the Community Food Bank, Inc. (the "Community Food Bank") is a non-profit corporation whose mission is to educate, advocate, acquire, store, and distribute food to anticipate and meet the food needs of the hungry in the community; and W��AS the Town of Marana Mayor and Council has long recognized the need to promote programs that encourage services for citizens of a11 ages and began caopera.tion and collaborataon with the Community Faod Bank in 1985 with the development of the Mazana Community Faod Bank; and W��AS in 2007, the Mayor and Council resolved to execute a lease and use agreement with the Community Food Bank for the operation of the Marana Learning Farm at the Marana Herit- age River Park. The Learning Farm was intended to be an operating farm and community resource for gardening classes, the dissemination of information regarding food production, and similar op- portunities; and W��AS in 2012, the Mayor and Council acknowledged the benefit of the Community Food Bank's use of the farm and resolved to execute a new lease and use agreement with the Community Food Bank to continue the operation of the Marana Learning Farm as the Marana Community Food Bank Farm at the Marana Herita.ge River Park; and W��AS tn 2013, economic conditions prohibit the continued operation of the Marana Community Food Bank Fa.rm by the Community Food Bank and the Community Food Bank has provided the Town with formal notice of its intent to terminate the lease and use agreement as of March 1, 2013; and W��as the Town of Mazana appreciates the efforts of the Community Food Bank to en- hance the Marana community and to preserve part of Marana's rich heritage through its work at the Marana Heritage River Park and its continued work at the Marana Community Food Bank; and W�ttEAS the Town Council finds that formally recognizing and providing support and assis- tance to the Community Food Bank in its continuing efforts to anticipate and meet the food needs of the hungry in the community is in the best interests of the Town of Marana and its citizens. Now, ��FOxE, be it resolved by the Mayor and Council of the Town of Marana, as fol- lows: Marana Resolurion 2013-014 - 1 - SECTTO1v 1. The Marana Town Council hereby formally recognizes and thanks the Communi- ty Food Bank for its past efforts at the Marana Heritage River Park and its continued work at the Ma- rana Community Food Bank, which enhances the quality of life for citizens a.nd visitors of Marana. SECTTON 2. The Town 1Vlanager is hereby authorized, either directly or by delegation to one or more Town employees, to provide the Town's support and assistance to the Community Food Bank in its continuing efforts to educate citizens of a11 ages about home gardening in our desert climate and to distribute food to those in need in our community.
