Continental Ranch Parcel 8
The Town recently completed repaving Parcel 8 in Continental Ranch. Roadwork be-
gan May 22 and ended June 30. The project was completed on time and came in
approximately $300,000 under budget.Ken Sklaroff, a resident of the neighbor-
hood, said, “The road re-surfacing job was done on-schedule, communication with
the members of the neighborhood was courteous and professional and the job was
done in a very professional manner.”
In addition to the many hours spent completing the project, staff talked to residents
to alleviate concerns related to the construction. Ross Iwamoto, who lives in Parcel
8 said, “The willingness to assure that any concerns by the residents were taken in-
to consideration promotes goodwill.I had nothing but good things to say. I know
of other neighborswho talked to workers to ask questions. They were pleasantly
surprised by the cooperative and friendly responses.”The work was overseen by
the CIP Division.

Splash n’ Dash
A multi-sport fitness event is off and running in
its second summer in Marana. The Town’s Splash
‘n’ Dash series is drawing people of all ages to
Ora Mae Harn Park and the Marana Pool every
other Thursday for an evening of fun competi-
tion.
Each event consists of a 200-, 400-or 800-yard
lap swim followed by a ½-, 1½- or 3-mile run.
Durations are based on age brackets; the mini-
mum age to participate is 6.
“By offering these type
of events, the Town is showing our community that fun,
family fitness is an important part of a healthy lifestyle,” said
Jennifer Lynn, a Gladden Farms resident and owner of De-
sert Endurance. “Matt Meyer and the crew from Parks and
Recreation continue to do a great job putting on and pro-
moting these events.”
Lynn said her three children –ages 7, 10 and 13 –enjoy the
series.
“The events offer a great way for people to try out a multi-
sport event in a friendly and non-threatening environment,”
she said.
Splash ‘n’ Dash hits the pool and park again Aug. 2 and 16.
Registration starts at 6 p.m. and the event begins at 6:30p.m. The cost is $5 per par-
ticipant for each event. For more information, check http://az-marana.civicplus.com/

Star Spangled Spectacular
The Star Spangled Spectacular went off with a bang July 4 at Arizona Pavilions. Local
restaurants, Nana’s Kitchen, Native New Yorker, and Wendy’s, offered specials. The
Quarry Pines hosted 8,000 people and thousands more frequented the Pavilions’ busi-
nesses and Crossroads Park to watch the 545-shell firework display. A big thank you is
owed to the all the sponsors of the event, including Comcast, The Marana Weekly
News, The Explorer Newspaper and Northwest Fire.

Highlight on Marana Police Department
The Marana Police Department has shown decreasing crime trends for the year. Both
violent crime, and property crime are down, as well as, motor vehicle traffic accidents.
Violent crime, which includes homicides, aggravated assault, sexual assault, and rob-
bery is down 33%, while property crime which includes, burglary, larceny, arson and
auto thefts is down 8%. Traffic accidents have shown an 11% reduction. Chief Ro-
zema attributes these reductions to the officers taking initiative, targeting crime, and
developing good programs.
S.T.O.P., or Strategic Tactical Operation Plan, is one of the programs that was devel-
oped to identify trends in crime, and develop action plans to create targeted patrols.
Officers also use D.A.R.T., or Direct Action Response Team while in the field to re-
spond to identified crime trends.
