Typical solids collected in the headworks include paper products, large pieces of wood, plastic products, clothing, sand, silt, glass and other dense solids. The replacement headworks system is significantly more efficient than the previous system. This is done by microorganisms working in the presence of oxygen (oxic), or in the case of denitrification, absence of oxygen (anoxic). The oxygen is introduced into the pond using air diffuser chains. These chains create moving waves of oxic and anoxic zones within the pond. This is known as the Wave Oxidation process.
