The structure and equipment must remain functional during and after natural or man -made disasters. CONSTRUCTION &DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS Life span Build for the future Maintainability Materials that are durable with the lowest ongoing maintenance costs (integrally colored block, rusted steel, natural stone, polished concrete floors, etc.) Avoid painted surfaces wherever possible to eliminate periodic maintenance. Security Build solid exterior walls with bollards and planters between the parking lot and the building occupants to protect against a bombing or assault by crashing a car into the building. Public perception Make the place feel strong and secure to the public who drive by. The challenge there is not making it look like a fortress. It needed to be warm and inviting, but make a statement of strength and security as well.
