TOWN
COUNCIL
OF
MEETING
MARANA
INFORMATION
DATE November 16, 1999
AGENDA ITEM:
TO: Mayor and Council
FROM: Ken Lawrence, Parks and Recreation Director
SUBJECT: Discussion/Direction: Signage for the senior recreation center at the Marana Park
DISCUSSION:
A proposal from Sally Jackson, art teacher at the Marana High School, was received to
design and build a ceramic tile sign for the senior center at the Marana Park. The sign
would be monument style, similar to what has been designed and erected at the Town
Hall and for the Marana Northwest Regional Airport, and would be approximately 4 feet
by 3 1 /2 feet on a metal frame bolted to cement footings. The cost of the proposed sign is
$4800, which includes materials and labor.
The Town has not budgeted for art projects from the general fund due to the town having
been eligible for either HURF or ISTEA monies through the Pima Association of
Governments Summer Youth Art Transportation projects for several years. Historically,
the town has received the maximum available to any municipality, which is $25,000 per
annual project. Staff believes that the town will be eligible for these funds in 2000
assuming that there are funds available to be allocated.
Students from Marana High School would be recruited for the art project regardless of
the funding source.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff seeks Council direction regarding whether to have signage designed and erected
immediately or whether signage consistent with the design of other ceramic tile signs
could be delayed until there is an indication that the PAG summer youth art
transportation funding is available in the summer of 2000.
SUGGESTED MOTION:
Mayor and Council's pleasure.
