Key Revisions Key revisions to the sign code include: •Compliance with the 2015 Supreme Court decision in Reed v. Town of Gilbert •Replacement of outdated standards with contemporary; meeting new needs and trends •Simplification of regulations; more user‐friendly without sacrificing effectiveness and enforceability •Clear and concise standards that are fair and reasonable while preserving community’s appearance•Integrated hyperlinks in the online version of the sign code •Planned Sign Programs considered by the Planning Commission •Standards to encourage the use of enhanced design elements for freestanding signs •Definition of ‘sign‐premises’ to allow commercial or industrial center occupants to display temporary on‐site signs anywhere within the center•Creation of a residential subdivision sign program to accommodate temporary on‐site and off‐site signs for homebuilders 2

Notable changes Residential subdivision sign program•Regulates on‐site signs and off‐site signs for new subdivisions with a sales office and homes for sale•Off‐site signs allowed on private property (with property owner’s authorization) within a reasonable distance of the subdivision‐ Multiple builders in the same master ‐planned community must share signs ‐ A builder with multiple subdivisions in the same area will combine projects on one sign •Town’s Regulatory Wayfinding Directional Sign Program ‐ Located within the right‐of‐way ‐ Staff currently working on revising the program with new designs for sign structures 6

Planning Commission Continued staff discussion with SAHBAPlanning, Engineering, and Legal re‐evaluated options for off‐site directional signs for residential subdivisions within the public right‐of‐way, and concluded the following: •Excessive amounts of signage within the public right‐of‐way is detrimental to our objective of maintaining clean and attractive roadways. •Enhance the existing regulatory wayfinding directional signage program to provide homebuilders with an alternative to their current signage. 9
Community Involvement The business community was engaged throughout the drafting and public hearing process.•Focus groups comprised of industries such as retail / service, real estate, sign manufacture, and others. •Draft code introduced to Marana Chamber of Commerce, Tucson Chamber of Commerce, Tucson Association of Realtors, Metropolitan Pima Alliance, and the Southern Arizona Homebuilders Association (SAHBA). •The Development Services website provides links to the draft code, as well as detailed updates. ‐ Option to submit feedback directly to staff available on the website•Direct email contact was made with businesses throughout the community. •Marana Chamber of Commerce provided regular updates to its members and directed them to the Town’s website.10
