TOWN COUNCIL
MEETING
INFORMATION
MEETING DATE:
TOWN OF MARANA
May 22, 2007
AGENDA ITEM: D. 1
TO: MAYOR AND COUNCIL
FROM: Kevin Kish, AICP, Planning Director
SUBJECT: Presentation: An update for the 2007 General Plan Process with a
discussion of the Future Town Planning Area.
DISCUSSION
This presentation will include discussion of a proposed Planning Area for the 2007 General Plan,
and also provide an update and a general description of the planning work underway.
Marana Planning Area
An expanded planning area, or area of influence, is an important part of planning for future
growth and development. In order to consider change and impacts from adjacent lands that are
not within the Town, the planning area extends well beyond current Town boundaries. This
planning area is important for our work with the 2007 Marana General Plan for several reasons:
. Orderly Growth
Defining patterns of growth that are compatible with the Marana General Plan.
· Area of Influence
Establishing a means to plan and influence change in adjacent areas.
· Development Activity
Continually tracking development activity and improvements that may affect
Town growth and infrastructure needs.
· Adjacent Jurisdictions
Establish close working relationships with adjacent jurisdictions to coordinate
planning and development.
· Future Annexation
Establish long range plans for potential annexations.
The planning area for each past Marana General Plan has grown in area along with the growing
area of the Town. In 2003, the Town was 118 square miles with 154 square miles in the
expanded planning area. In 2007, Marana is 120 square miles with a proposed planning area of
242 square miles.
The proposed 2007 planning area has not changed significantly from 2003 south and east of the
Town. These areas are more urbanized and have established development patterns. The planning
area does extend further west to Trico Road to include large, undeveloped land areas, and north
into Pinal County. With significant growth envisioned in Pinal County, the expanded planning
area lies from the CAP Canal east ofI-10 and extends through Red Rock and west of the Santa
Cruz River.
