HomeMy WebLinkAboutCouncil Presentation - Professional Service Leadership and Lifesaving A Community Collaboration"Professional Service Leadership & Lifesaving" �o � A Community Collaboration MARANA AZ Wayne Barnett, Parks and Recreation Deputy Director Background • Marana Parks and Recreation swimming pool currently operates from Memorial Day to Labor Day. • Marana Swimming Pool hires 8 - 9 Lifeguards each Summer. • In 2025, the Marana Community and Aquatic Center will open, requiring 40 - 50 Lifeguards during the Summer, and 10 - 20 Lifeguards year-round. • There are more than 30 swimming pools in Pima County that are in need of Lifeguards each Summer. • Since 2020 there has been a nationwide lifeguard shortage. • The Lifeguard shortage continues. Partnership O ortuni • Marana Parks and Recreation • Marana Unified School District • Pima County Parks and Recreation., Natural resources - Aquatics MARANA AZ 4A10'. .BMLPIMA COUNTY Professional Service Leadership and Lifesaving • 13 Week Course Offered to Juniors and Seniors at Marana High School. • Class Will Be Offered, Monday - Thursday, During "0" Hour(7:41 am - 8:45am). • Course Will Be Offered as a Physical Education Credit. • Course Content Will Include: Lifeguarding Principles and Skills, Discussions About Leadership and Public Service, and Other Health Related Topics. • Water Skills Sessions Will Be Offered. • Course Will Comply with State of Arizona Curriculum Standards. • Students Who Complete the Course Will Be Prepared to Earn Lifeguard Certification. r4� Partner Responsibilities • Marana • Lifeguarding Skills, Taught by Marana Parks and Recreation Staff, Kevin Goodrich, and Allison Rock. • Two, 1 Hour Classroom Sessions Each Week. • Four, 5 Hour Sessions at Thad Terry Aquatic Center(NW YMCA). • Issue Up to 2 StarGuard Elite Lifeguard Certificates to MUSD Educators Who Complete the Entire Course. • MUSD • Provide Health Related Instruction. • One, 1 Hour Classroom Session Each Week. • Secure "Guest Speakers", to Include Community Leaders. • One, 1 Hour Classroom Session Each Week. • Assign MUSD Educators to Supervise the Course to Ensure Compliance with State of Arizona Curriculum Standards. • Pima • Provide Access to Thad Terry Aquatic Center. 0' Provide Lifeguards for Water Skills sessions. E Timeline • Marana Parks and Recreation Recognizes Need for Future Staffing of Marana Community and Aquatics Center. • Partners Meet to Discuss the Possibility of Collaborating. • Curriculum Created During Multiple Working Meetings. • Presentation of Program/Curriculum to MUSD Board on December 14.
