HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 88-002 Protection of the water quality and supply for residentsRESOLUTION 88-02 DECLARATION OF PROTECTION OF T~ WATER QUALITY AND SUPPLY FOR THE RESIDENTS OF THE TOWN OF MARANA WHEREAS, The Town Council of Marana, Arizona is concerned with the Health and Welfare of the Mararia Area Residents who live within the boundaries of the Town and the Sphere of Influence. This concern requires that the Council be ever vigilant to any activities, conditions or proposals that could seriously affect those living or owning properties in the area. With this responsibility in mind; and WHEREAS, Residents is extracted underground acquirer that Tucson Metropolitan Area; the domestic water which is used by the Mararia Area by pumping through wells from an is hydrologically down stream from the and WHEREAS, the quality of the ground water upstream from the Marana Area has deteriorated and recent reports have identified that it contains such contaminants as Trichloroethylene (T.C.E.) and other known carcinogens, while the water presently being being served to the Marana Area Residents does not contain such contaminants; and WHEREAS, Governmental Subdivisions and Water Utilities upstream of the Marana Area are considering the recharge of water to the acquirer and the quality of this water may not meet the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) quality standards for drinking water prior to recharge; and WHEREAS, the flow of contaminated water, the recharge of untreated water and the discharge of effluent from the Tucson Metropolitan Area upstream of the Marana Area could cause the deterioration of the water in the acquirer from which the Marana Area Residents extract water for domestic use; and WHEREAS, the City of Tucson, the County of Pima, Upstream Water Utilities, Upstream Wastewater Treatment Agencies, the State of Arizona Departments of Health Services and Environmental Quality, and the EPA each have regulatory and operating responsibilites for the quality of water used by the general population in the Tucson Metropolitan Area. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the Town Council of Marana, Arizona that as we consider the Health and Welfare of the Marana Area Residents; We oppose any activities upstream of the Marana Area which would in anyway cause the deterioration of the water quality in the acquirer serving the Marana Area Residents. That we will take whatever necessary and appropriate actions permitted by law to protect the water quality and supply for the Residents of Marana.
