A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF MARANA
SUPPORTING THE NORTHWEST TUCSON ACTIVE MANAGEMENT AREA
REPLENISHMENT PROGRAM.
WHEREAS, the Town of Marana, Arizona owns and operates a municipal water utility
serving a portion of the Town; and
WHEREAS, the long term plan of the Town of Marana, Arizona is to provide municipal
water service throughout the area included within the Town boundaries; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Marana, Arizona recognizes the necessity of using renewable
water supplies to serve the projected population growth within the Town to comply with the
Assured Water Supply requirements of the State of Arizona; and
WHEREAS, the long-term population growth in Northwest Pima County requires the
delivery of renewable water supplies to the Town of Marana, Arizona; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Marana, Arizona, is extremely interested in participating in the
Lower Santa Cruz River recharge project as the Central Arizona Project (CAP) canal bisects the
Town, and the recharge of CAP water in this area could directly replenish the well fields
planned to be used by the Town to provide municipal water service to its residents; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Marana, Arizona supports the development of cost-effective,
multi-jurisdictional projects that combine groundwater recharge with flood control,
environmental enhancement and recreational.opportunities; and
WHEREAS, meeting the water resource needs in Northwest Pima County in a cost-
effective manner requires the cooperation of the jurisdictions and water providers; and
WHEREAS, the Northwest Tucson Active Management Area Replenishment Program
incudes combining groundwater recharge in the Lower Santa Cruz River with construction of
a flood control levee within Mararia, development of a recharge project in the Big Wash and
Canada Del Oro areas within the Town of Oro Valley and Pima County, and establishment of
riparian areas and recreational opportunities in both areas; and
WHEREAS, local participants are working with the United States Bureau of Reclamation
on a study, to be conducted in 1995, to investigate the feasibility and costs and benefits of
groundwater recharge, environmental enhancement and recreational development in the vicinity
of the Lower Santa Cruz River, Big Wash and Canada Del Oro River; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Council of the Town of
Marana, Arizona supports the further study and development of the Northwest Area Tucson
Active Management Area Replenishment Program. The multi-jurisdictional and multi-benefit
approach of the Replenishment Program will assist the region in developing long-term solutions
for meeting its water resource needs and in enhancing and preserving its natural resources.

Further, the Town of Mararia, Arizona urges the involved parties to participate and assist with
the completion of the feasibility study so that the results can be incorporated into the water
resource plans of the Town of Mararia, Arizona and the other communities and water utilities
within the region.
PASSED, ADOPTED AND APPROVED by the Mayor and Council of the Town of
Marana, Arizona, this 20th day of September, I994.
